Acting Interior Secretary Lynn Scarlett and Department of Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez signed the National Fish Habitat Action Plan, credit Tami A Heilemann

Acting Interior Secretary Lynn Scarlett and Department of Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez signed the National Fish Habitat Action Plan at a special ceremony on the Potomac River. This plan will foster new national and local grassroots-driven partnership efforts to protect, restore and enhance key watersheds. The Plan is based on a consolidation of the best scientific expertise on fisheries and habitat management. To date, the action plan has more than 450 organizational supporters, from small local watershed groups and fishing clubs to international conservation organizations, federal agencies, angling industries and academia.

Acting Department of the Interior Secretary Lynn Scarlett announced April 22 that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a variety of partners
will spend more than $8 million in 2006 to remove or bypass barriers to fish passage in 26 states.

Missouri Youth Wins Federal Junior Duck Stamp Competition

"Morning Swim," an acrylic painting by 15 year-old Rebekah Nastav, is this year's Junior Duck Stamp Contest winner.
A redhead duck will be featured on the 2006-2007 Junior Duck Stamp. The design for the new stamp, painted by 15 year-old Rebekah Nastav of Amoret, Missouri, was chosen by a panel of judges on April 20 at the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest held in Washington, D.C.

Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns, Secretary of the Interior Gale A. Norton and Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt today moved to further ensure the protection of people, domestic poultry and wild birds by unveiling an enhanced national framework for early detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild migratory birds in the United States. This readiness plan and system builds on, significantly expands and unifies ongoing efforts among federal, state, regional and local wildlife agencies.
